Gippsland Community Legal Service is seeking a motivated graduate lawyer or lawyer with post-admission experience who is passionate about advancing justice in the community legal sector and providing free legal assistance for the Gippsland community to join a collaborative team.

About the Organisation

Gippsland Community Legal Services (GCLS) is an independent non-profit service managed by Anglicare Victoria. GCLS is funded by the Federal and State Governments to deliver free legal services throughout the Gippsland region. The mission of GCLS is to improve access to justice for all members of the Gippsland Community by providing legal advice and advocacy, empowering individuals, and groups through community education, and to remove systemic injustice by advocating for law reform.

The Role

Community Lawyers at GCLS provide free legal services to people who live, work, or study in Gippsland including advice, representation and advocacy, and community legal education in the areas of:

  • family violence intervention orders
  • family law
  • victims of crime assistance
  • rental stress and tenancy
  • fines and debts
  • disaster Preparedness

About You

You are a motivated graduate or a lawyer with post-admission experience who is passionate about advancing justice in the community legal sector and advocating for clients experiencing disadvantage with empathy, respect and cultural awareness. Collaborative and adaptable, you are able to build relationships and are committed to driving meaningful change.

Key to your success is your

  • Excellent analytical and legal research skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the legal issues facing clients experiencing disadvantage and the underlying systemic issues that contribute.
  • Ability to sensitively communicate with a diverse range of people whilst having understanding and empathy for their complex needs.
  • Openness to training and upskilling.

You will

  • Be admitted or eligible for admission to the legal profession as an Australian Legal Practitioner.
  • Have an understanding of or be capable of quickly building an understanding of a range of legal areas, including family violence, family law, tenancy, victims' compensation, infringements and debt.
  • Have a commitment to the promotion of social justice and human rights, in particular the rights of people to live free from violence and abuse

Please Note: It is mandatory for the successful applicant to hold a current Working with Children Check and be prepared to undergo a National Criminal History Check prior to commencement.
